Humanitarian Logistics, a Career for Women

I have been delighted by the interest shown in the  publication "Humanitarian Logistics - A Career for Women" (click link to download) which I published on behalf of WISE, the Women's Institute for Supply Chain Excellence.

This compilation of articles and personal stories looks to inspire and encourage women into humanitarian logistics as well as to raise the profile of the profession.
It starts with a collection of articles that give an overview of humanitarian logistics. There is outlined some of the important work being done to raise the profile of both professional logistics, and the role that women play in this field.

There follows a wide range of personal stories from those with years of experience in the field to those just starting out. In these stories comes through both the challenges that individuals have gone through as well as the passion they have for their work.
"Humanitarian Logistics—A Career for Women" aims to inform the reader as well as touch them on a personal level.

  4. Dear Pam,

Thank you very much your reply. I have found your blog by google-ing Humanitarian Logistics and fortunately found your blog. I have read how you advised people who are interested in Logistics and supply chain. This really motivated me to contact you to get your advice and expertise for my research.

Let me thank you in advance for your attention and time since my email is long to give you detailed information:

Let me little bit introduce myself. As I have written on your blog, I am from Somalia and studying in Rotterdam University, majoring Logistics Management. It is one year Master Program and I have just finished my first semester and have done great so far. I live two years in the Netherlands as an asylum seeker and I am a client of Refugee Student Foundation in the Netherlands.

Logistics is a new field to me because I have done Business Administration in my bachelor in Mogadishu, Somalia and extra post graduate courses of Conflict and Development and Political Science from University of Kansas (via internet.)

I have chosen logistics field because: First I like challenge and discovering new fields. Second, it is a knowledge that my country lacks and no body studied it so far inside Somalia. I left form Mogadishu early 2009 and I still remember how Logistics both the knowledge and practical is lacking there. Third, I see it as an interesting subject to study where I can excel and make my future career.

My research topic is: What Keeps Humanitarian Logistics Going in Somalia?
It is exploratory qualitative research using Inductive reasoning

I will definitely need to do several interviews and also get secondary data to support my study. I am trying to contact with WFP Logistics in Somalia to use as a 'Case Study' but I have not good connection with WFP and my network is very small as I have told you and I do not know whether they will help me or not. That is why I am looking for knowledgeable professional people like you who can help me with my study. Of course, I will mention their professional help in my thesis keeping the ethics.

Why I am interested in this research?

I am from Somalia, where the humanitarian logistic faces a huge problems from the infrastructure to security but the humanitarian logistics is still going in Somalia at some point. They try and manage to reach the needy with the existence of unprecedented challenges. The air and sea ports is not well equipped, the there is no sophisticated supply chain that helps humanitarian agencies to reach the needy effectively. And the worst is that the humanitarian workers are killed or kidnapped in Somalia. But the logistics is still doing its job one way or the other with this unprecedented difficulties.

In short, I am interested in knowing what really keeps humanitarian Logistics going in Somalia?

I really appreciate your advice and contribution (Relevant secondary data, especially articles which I miss) and also links you can give me to get enough interviews for my research.

Thanks for you time and effort,

    Yusuf
